Preview: North Mustangs vs. Coronado Dons
Two dominant guards in Saniyah Downing and Kailyn Holsey are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The North Mustangs's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Coronado Dons at 12:00 p.m. on December 27th. Hopefully North is not getting complacent, as they presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Coronado in Arizona (North is ranked 133rd, while Coronado is ranked 272nd).
North scored the most points they've had all season to find success last Thursday. They blew past Maryvale 79-22 on the road. That looming 79-22 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for North yet this season.
North found their leader in underclassman Xxylina Flores, who scored 28 points along with five steals. Those 28 points set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Downing, who scored 18 points along with seven steals.
Meanwhile, Coronado's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their fifth straight loss. They were dealt a 51-7 loss at the hands of Arizona College Prep. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Coronado has scored all season.
North's victory ended a four-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 5-6. As for Coronado, their loss was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 2-7.
North beat Coronado 33-26 in their previous meeting back in November of 2021. Does North have another victory up their sleeve, or will Coronado turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
