Basketball Recap: Woodbridge Takes a Loss

Woodbridge lost against Gainesville back in December of 2022 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Woodbridge Vikings lost 64-42 to the Gainesville Cardinals. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 204th, while the Cardinals are ranked 92nd).

Despite the defeat, Woodbridge saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Maia Melendez posted 21 points. That was a full 50% of Woodbridge's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ayanna Porter, who earned six points in addition to 11 rebounds and three steals.

Woodbridge's loss dropped their record down to 9-11. As for Gainesville, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a massive bump to their 11-9 record this season.

Woodbridge will square off against Forest Park at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Gainesville has already played their next contest, a 59-38 defeat against Bishop O'Connell on the 5th.
