Basketball Recap: Edgewood Red Wolves vs. Merritt Island Mustangs
The Edgewood Red Wolves's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their third straight defeat. They took a 67-53 bruising from Merritt Island. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Edgewood in their matchups with the Mustangs: they've now lost seven in a row.
Edgewood lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Brayden Wasdin, who scored 15 points along with three steals. Wasdin hasn't dropped below two steals for five straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Jeffrey Almeda, who scored ten points.
Leading Merritt Island to victory were Jayce Brandes and Hudson Blank. Brandes scored 21 points along with five steals, while Blank scored 21 points along with six rebounds. Abhishek Joseph was another key contributor, scoring five points along with three steals.
Edgewood has not been sharp recently as the team's lost eight of their last ten matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-13 record this season. As for Merritt Island, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-13.
Edgewood won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against the Titans at 7:00 p.m. on January 23rd. Odyssey Charter School will be looking to keep their three-game home win streak alive. Merritt Island will take on the Commodores at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Eau Gallie has now lost 11 straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 8.
