Basketball Recap: Deitrich Williams' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Greene Central over Southwest Edgecombe

Greene Central suffered their closest defeat since February 19, 2024 on Tuesday. They fell just short of the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars by a score of 54-51. The loss continues a trend for the Rams in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now lost three in a row.

Greene Central lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Deitrich Williams, who posted 13 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jason Wilson, who went 5 for 6 on his way to 11 points.

SouthWest Edgecombe got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Justin Bridgers out in front who went 7 of 16 en route to 15 points and three blocks. Bridgers has been hot, having posted two or more blocks the last eight times he's played. Another player making a difference was Xander Brown, who had 11 points.

Greene Central now has a losing record at 7-8. As for SouthWest Edgecombe, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-3 record this season.

Greene Central and SouthWest Edgecombe should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. Greene Central (ranked 190th) will meet North Pitt (ranked 394th) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Greene Central is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 61.6 points per game this season. Similarly, SouthWest Edgecombe will square off against West Craven at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday up 374 places (87 vs. 461).
