After leading Fremont to runner-up status in Class A a year ago, Taylor McCabe hopes to win it all this winter.
As a junior, Fremont's Taylor McCabe put up All-Nebraska numbers while leading the Tigers to a 23-4 record and a spot in the Class A girls state basketball championship game where they fell 56-52 to Lincoln Pius X. Now, as she prepares for her senior season, McCabe is within striking distance of scoring 2,000 points for her high school career and winning a Nebraska large school state title.
One of Nebraska's top 3-point shooters, the 5-foot, 9-inch Iowa commit scored 23.6 points an outing a year ago. McCabe was also credited with dishing out 3.7 assists, pulling down 4.9 rebounds, swiping 2.6 enemy balls and swatting just short of one block per outing to secure Nebraska's top returning girls basketball stat line.
McCabe scored 25 or more points 11 times a year ago, including a season-high 37 in a 77-73 win over Iowa power Glenwood. The point guard/shooting guard also posted 34 points in a 77-55 triumph over North Platte.
Southwest's Caylin Barnett averaged a double-double a year ago while leading a young Roughrider team to a 10-11 record with 18.2 points, 1.4 assists, 12.2 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 0.9 blocks per outing to take the second spot in this week's Top 10.
Addison Schneider of Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family returns for her senior season after scoring 18.8 points an outing and ripping down 13.5 boards for the Cornhusker State's third best line. Superior's Shayla Meyer and Jordyn Carr of Tri County Northeast slide into the Nos. 4 and 5 spots respectively after scoring 37.8 points between them.
Classes A, C1, C2, D1 and D2 are all represented in this week's Top 10. But that does not mean that returning athletes in Class B did not produce All-State caliber stat lines a year ago. Lexington's Sarah Treffer led the way in Class B after averaging 19.2 points, 1.2 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game a year ago.
In order to be considered for this week's Top 10, an athlete had to post an average of at least 10.0 points per game. Then, those athletes were given higher consideration for averages of 15.0 points, 3.0 assists, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals or 1.0 blocked shot.
