League recap: Melaccio breaks off league-leading run for North Branford

North Branford's Josh Melaccio rumbled for the longest rushing play in Pequot - Sassacus this season in his game against Haddam-Killingworth last week. Melaccio ran for 77 yards on the play and finished with 121 on the day as his team beat the Cougars.

Cromwell was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in the league. The Panthers vanquished Lewis Mills 47-14 earlier in the week.

Brandan Basil threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns. He was 10-16 with zero interceptions.

Evan Smith was the best wideout in the league this week as Valley Regional/Old Lyme defeated Nonnewaug. Smith racked up two receptions for 83 yards. Chris Jean-Pierre helped Valley Regional/Old Lyme's passing attack out by catching three balls for 43 yards.

Derrick Villard was the most productive running back in Pequot - Sassacus this week. He ran for 173 yards on five carries as Cromwell bested the Chiefs. Alex Ramirez also contributed to the rushing game with 56 yards on the ground.

North Branford's Basil and Chris Caron have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Basil has thrown for 554 yards this season, while Caron, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 14 catches for 193 yards. Villard from Chris Eckert's team leads the league in rushing with 395 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Old Saybrook-Westbrook takes on Valley Regional/Old Lyme. At the moment, the Rams are in first, while Tim King's team is in sixth.

Mark Basil's team moved up to 34 from 66 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 51-6 win over Haddam-Killingworth helped the Thunderbirds improve their standing.
