Baseball Game Preview: Grundy County Yellowjackets vs. Huntland Hornets

The Grundy County Yellowjackets will square off against the Huntland Hornets at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Grundy County has given up an average of 9.5 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Grundy County managed to slip by Middle Tennessee Monarchs the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Yellowjackets came up short against Middle Tennessee Monarchs on Friday, falling 15-3. The Yellowjackets' loss continues a trend for the squad, making it three in a row.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Huntland). They blew past South Pittsburg 10-2 on Friday.

Grant Jernigan was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits (and only one walk). Those seven strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Huntland let Jed Ashley and Matthew Dickson run wild. Ashley scored a run while going 2-for-3, while Dickson scored two runs while going 1-for-3. What's more, Dickson posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Luke Powell, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.

Huntland hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Pittsburg struck out seven times.

Huntland's victory ended a seven-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-8. As for Grundy County, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-13.
