Baseball Recap: North Victorious

North proved they can win big on Friday (they won by eight) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the South Rebels 9-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Rangers have posted since April 17, 2024.

Gerardo Torres made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Braylon Rolf and Tyler Leasure did most of the damage at the plate: Rolf went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double, while Leasure went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Rolf has become a key player for North: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 2-7 otherwise. Brady Trem was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

The victory got North back to even at 7-7. As for South, they dropped their record down to 4-9 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. North will square off against St. Vincent-St. Mary at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Fighting Irish's pitching crew has only allowed three runs per game this season, so the Rangers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for South, they will face off against Kenston at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bombers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.77 runs per game on average), something the Rebels will no doubt try to take advantage of.
