Softball Game Preview: Straughn Tigers vs. New Brockton Gamecocks

Straughn is a perfect 6-0 against New Brockton since March of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Tigers will look to defend their home field against the Gamecocks at 5:00 p.m. Straughn's pitching crew has only allowed 3.3 runs per game this season, so New Brockton's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Straughn will bounce into Thursday's matchup after beating Luverne, who they had gone 1-8 against in their nine prior meetings. Straughn narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Luverne 3-1.

Jaycee Norton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Straughn's victory was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Annlee Wise, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs Wise has posted since back in March. Adalyn Till also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.

Meanwhile, New Brockton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-5 heartbreaker at the hands of Pike County. The game snapped a strange streak: the last three times these teams have met, it?s been the away team that?s taken home the W.

Straughn has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-14 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for New Brockton, their loss dropped their record down to 4-18.

Everything went Straughn's way against New Brockton in their previous meeting back in February, as Straughn made off with a 13-0 victory. Will the Tigers repeat their success, or do the Gamecocks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
