Baseball Recap: Cardinal Huskies vs. Wickliffe Blue Devils
Cardinal extended their losing streak to four on Monday, dropping their season record down to 1-10 in the process. They came up short against the Wickliffe Blue Devils, falling 10-0. The Huskies were not able to make up for their defeat to the Blue Devils from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.
Cardinal saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kannon Strever, who went 1-for-2 with one double.
As for Wickliffe, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games.
On Wickliffe's side, Liam Widemire made a big impact no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Widemire has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Wickliffe got a massive performance out of Frankie Bucar, who went 1-for-2 with four stolen bases and three runs. Those four stolen bases gave Bucar a new career-high. Nunzio Zivnoska was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
While Cardinal had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
