Preview: Trinidad Miners vs. Sargent Farmers
Trinidad is 0-3 against Sargent since February of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Trinidad Miners will head out on the road to challenge the Sargent Farmers at 6:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a four-game winning streak alive.
Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to post seven more assists than your opponent, a fact Trinidad proved last Saturday. They walked away with a 48-41 win over Sangre de Cristo.
Trinidad's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Maya Morales led the charge by scoring six points along with 14 rebounds and four blocks. That's the first time this season that Morales posted two or more blocks. Another player making a difference was Monserrad Viera Flores, who scored 13 points along with seven assists and seven steals.
Meanwhile, Sargent scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Saturday. They claimed a resounding 86-22 victory over La Veta at home. With that victory, Sargent brought their scoring average up to 52 points per game.
Sargent's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Bailey Asbell, who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and six steals. Asbell is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played. Angelise Sandoval was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with seven rebounds and six steals.
Trinidad's victory bumped their record up to 6-3. As for Sargent, they pushed their record up to 6-3 with that win, which was their third straight at home.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Trinidad have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 24.2 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Sargent, though, as they've been averaging only 27.4 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Trinidad came up short against Sargent in their previous matchup back in January of 2023, falling 39-26. Can Trinidad avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
