Baseball Recap: Henry Clay Takes a Loss

Henry Clay had lost five straight at home, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 16-15 to make it six. They fell just short of the Shelby County Rockets by a score of 5-3. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Blue Devils of the 7-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2023.

As for Shelby County, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-18 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games.

For Shelby County's part, Foster Whisman made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out ten over four innings pitched. Whisman has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one RBI.

In other batting news, Isaac Voight was excellent, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.

Coming up, Henry Clay will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against DuPont Manual at 6:00 p.m. The Blue Devils' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Crimsons have averaged an impressive 6.1 runs per game this season. As for Shelby County, they will face off against Franklin County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
