Basketball Recap: South Mecklenburg Now 10-1 over Last 11 Games

South Mecklenburg won the last time they faced Palisades and things went their way on Friday too. The South Mecklenburg Sabres strolled past the Palisades Pumas with points to spare, taking the game 54-38. Given the Sabres' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 51st, while the Pumas are ranked 311th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

South Mecklenburg's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Nykira Arrington, who posted eight points and 19 boards. That's the most points Arrington has posted since back in November of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Chloe Grant, who had seven points along with seven rebounds and six blocks.

South Mecklenburg was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Palisades only posted 11 assists.

Despite the loss, Palisades still got an impressive performance from Tynilla Simpkins, who dropped a double-double on 23 points and 18 boards. Simpkins has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played. Another player making a difference was Brooklyn Young, who earned six points and four steals.

South Mecklenburg is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 18-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.4 points per game. As for Palisades, they dropped their record down to 8-12 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight on the road.

South Mecklenburg will challenge Ardrey Kell at 6:00 p.m. on February 7th. As for Palisades, they are taking a road trip to challenge Olympic at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
