Football Game Preview: Astoria/VIT Rebels vs. Abingdon/Avon Tornadoes

The Astoria/VIT Rebels are taking a road trip to square off against the Abingdon/Avon Tornadoes at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Abingdon/Avon took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Astoria/VIT, who comes in off a win.

Astoria/VIT took a loss when they played away from home last Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They blew past Lewistown/Cuba/Spoon River Valley, posting a 49-0 victory. The Rebels' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Astoria/VIT found their leader in sophomore Colby Martin, who rushed for 223 yards and four touchdowns on only nine carries. Those four rushing touchdowns set a new season-high mark for Martin. The team also got some help courtesy of Riley Foglesong, who rushed for 118 yards and a pair of TDs on only six carries.

Astoria/VIT was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 368 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since the start of last season.

Meanwhile, Abingdon/Avon's game on Friday was all tied up 14-14 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They were just a hair shy of victory and fell 21-20 to Princeville. The loss continues a trend for the Tornadoes in their meetings with the Princes: they've now lost four in a row.

The win was their first at home , bumping their record up to 2-3. As for Abingdon/Avon, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-4.

Astoria/VIT might still be hurting after the 28-6 loss they got from Abingdon/Avon when the teams last played back in September of 2024. Can the Rebels avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
