Soccer Preview: Athens vs. Marietta
Athens hasn't had much luck against Marietta recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Athens Bulldogs will challenge the Marietta Tigers at 7:30 p.m. Athens' last four matches have been decided by no more than a goal, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Last Thursday, neither Athens nor Point Pleasant could gain the upper hand so the two teams had to settle for a 0-0 draw.
Meanwhile, Marietta had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4 goals) and they went ahead and made it five on Saturday. They had just enough and edged the Big Reds out 3-2. The win was all the more spectacular given the Tigers' disadvantage in MaxPreps' soccer rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 67th in Ohio, while the Big Reds are ranked sixth in West Virginia).

Athens' draw gives them a new season record of 7-4-3. As for Marietta, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-4.
Athens was able to grind out a solid win over Marietta in their previous matchup back in August, winning 2-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Athens since the team won't have the home-pitch advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
