Softball Recap: Holy Cross Takes a Loss

Holy Cross extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 4-6 in the process. They lost 6-0 to the Atherton Ravens. The Cougars were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Ravens apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

As for Atherton, they pushed their record up to 4-8 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games.

For Atherton's part, not much got past Charlee Heselschwerdt, who gave up just a hit and racked up 14 Ks to keep Holy Cross off the board. Those 14 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Heselschwerdt.

On the hitting side, Atherton let Izzy Cummins and Crissy Reese run wild. Cummins got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base, while Reese went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Another player making a difference was Ava Keen, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

Looking ahead, Holy Cross will be playing at home against Fern Creek at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Atherton, they will challenge Seneca at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Red Hawks have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.75 runs per game on average), something the Ravens will no doubt try to take advantage of.
