After a heartbreaking overtime loss in the 2016 Dick's Sporting Goods High School Nationals championship game, La Lumiere entered this season on a mission.
The Lakers began the season ranked No. 1 in the Independent Top 10 behind seniors
Brian Bowen and
Jaren Jackson along with sophomore floor general
Tyger Campbell.
Under the direction of third-year head coach Shane Heirman, La Lumiere reeled off 16 straight victories to start the season, including a statement 69-54 win over Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) at the Cancer Research Classic in January. The Lakers then suffered a 76-74 loss to Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) a week later at the Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass.
It's the only time the Lakers would taste defeat this season.
La Lumiere finished with 13 consecutive wins, beating Findlay Prep again in the Dick's Nationals semifinals and blowing past three-time champion Montverde Academy (Fla.) 70-52 in the final.
Mission accomplished.
Three wins in New York City solidified La Lumiere's claim to the 2016-17 Independent Top 10 national championship and raised Heirman's three-year record to 76-7.
