Texas high school baseball strikeout leaders: Barry Miller, Kaleb Gauna top leaderboard

Horizon, Hondo hurlers among five pitchers who have struck out more than 100 batters this season.

Two Texas pitchers having almost identical seasons separated by 550 miles lead the state in strikeouts. Barry Miller, a left-hander from Horizon (El Paso), and Kaleb Gauna, a right-hander from Hondo, both have struck out 116 to top the Lone Star State.

Miller, a junior, is 7-4 with a 0.62 ERA after giving up just 33 hits in 56.1 innings. He's struck out more than 10 six times with a high of 18 in a 5-2 win over Hanks. Miller also plays center field and first base and is hitting .351 (26 of 74) with four doubles, three triples and a homer.

Gauna, a senior, is 3-1 in 15 outings with a 2.91 ERA. He opened the season with 14 strikeouts in six innings during a 3-0 loss to Cornerstone Christian. He's caught fire of late with 43 strikeouts his last three outings. Gauna is the team's catcher when he doesn't pitch.

The duo are two of five pitchers currently in the state with triple digit strikeout totals.
