High school basketball: Yates, Hobbs lead list of teams that averaged 100 points for a season

Legendary Houston team leads Century Club squads, while New Mexico power appears seven times.

Perhaps no other team statistic is more anticipated, celebrated and reviled than the 100-point barrier in a high school basketball game. Fans can start anticipating it as soon as the end of the first quarter. They celebrate it as soon as the double digits flip over on the scoreboard. And no opposing coach or team wants to be the victim of a 100-point outing.

Scoring 100 points in a game isn't really a record. It's an arbitrary number deemed to be a noteworthy milestone, yet the National Federation of High Schools Record Book has multiple entries regarding "most 100-point games," "most consecutive 100-point games" and "highest scoring average."

MaxPreps has attempted to track down many of the teams that have averaged over 100 points in a season. Hobbs (N.M.) has multiple entries, starting with a 114.6 scoring average that ranked as the national record for 40 years until Yates (Houston) broke the record in 2010. Hobbs makes the list seven times from 1970 to 1982. Yates, meanwhile, makes the list three times. Other multiple entrants include Wheatley (Houston), Jefferson (Los Angeles), South Lamar (Ala.), Minnesota Transitions (Minneapolis), and East Central (San Antonio).

The first team to average 100 points a game is believed to be Wampum (Pa.), which averaged 101 points per game in 1955. Led by Don Hennon, who broke Wilt Chamberlain's state career scoring record with 2,376 points, Wampum went 31-0 and won the state title.

Another interesting entry is Lame Deer (Mont.), which may have had the all-time greatest "name" lineup in 2000 with Tommy McCormick, Lomar Wandering Medicine, Gernell Killsnight, Tolani Tsosie, Dustin Two Moons, Simon Walksalong, and Omar Littlewhiteman.

When information is available, teams are listed with the number of 100-point games, the number of consecutive 100-point games, the highest score for the season and the team's overall record. Sources include the NFHS record book, state association record books, Cal-Hi Sports Record Book by Mark and Nelson Tennis, Chuck Langerman of New Jersey, MaxPreps score reports and research via newspapers.com.

There are undoubtedly more teams to add to the list, so any additions or changes contact Kevin Askeland at kevinaskeland65@gmail.com.
