Baseball Recap: Newburyport Starts Season with Victory at Home

Newburyport gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out the Marblehead Magicians 7-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Clippers have posted since May 11, 2024.

Evan Luekens tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched.

On the hitting side, Newburyport got a big performance out of Jack Mercier, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. The team also got some help courtesy of Troy Varoudakis, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newburyport is headed away from home for the first time to face off against Whittier RVT at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Marblehead, they will head out to challenge Manchester Essex at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
