League recap: Wellsboro tops Canton to extend winning streak

Northern Tier 1 recap September 24, 2013

Adding to the longest winning streak in Northern Tier 1 this week, Wellsboro beat Canton 56-7,. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.

Towanda scaled the state rankings by moving to 260 from 359 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Knights were able to move up by topping North Penn 33-0.

Noah Huff put up the best numbers in passing as Towanda topped the Panthers. He finished with 9 completions for 63 yards.

Huff was the best running back in the league this week. In 11 carries, he ran for 202 yards as James Wecker's team defeated Cowanesque Valley. Tony Daniello also contributed to the rushing game with 56 yards on the ground.

Hunsinger was the best receiver in Northern Tier 1 this week as the Wildcats beat the Indians. Hunsinger tallied 3 receptions for 63 yards. Cody Cain helped Athens' passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 28 yards.

On the heels of Bo Burleigh and Bryce Zaparzynski, North Penn has had great success on offense. Burleigh leads the league in passing with 506 yards, while Zaparzynski has rushed for 580 yards this season. Tops in the league in receiving yards is Wellsboro's Brandon Owlett, with 171 yards on 8 catches.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Athens takes on Troy. Jack Young's team is in fifth place, while the Trojans are in second place.

The Hornets took down the Warriors 56-7 last week, the largest margin of any game.
