Football Game Preview: St. Mary's Pirates vs. Calhan Bulldogs

The St. Mary's Pirates are taking a road trip to face off against the Calhan Bulldogs at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. St. Mary's has given up an average of 36.8 points per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

On Friday, St. Mary's took a blow against Elbert, falling 52-21. The game marked the Pirates' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

St. Mary's might have lost, but man, Michael Trechter was a machine: he rushed for 175 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 9.7 yards per carry, and also threw for 117 yards and one touchdown. Trechter's longest rush was for an incredible 70 yards. Jackson Beam was Trechter's top target, picking up 70 receiving yards and one score.

St. Mary's didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Hayden Cuccinelli and Matthew Crocfer.

Meanwhile, Calhan came up short against Simla on Friday and fell 29-20. The Bulldogs have struggled against the Cubs recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.

Calhan's loss dropped their record down to 2-4. As for St. Mary's, they now have a losing record of 2-3.

Saturday's contest might be decided on the ground. St. Mary's has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 215 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Calhan struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 236.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Saturday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.

St. Mary's didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Calhan in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, but they still walked away with a 24-20 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
