Softball Game Preview: Samueli Academy Firewolves vs. Century Centurions

The Samueli Academy Firewolves will venture away from home to face off against the Century Centurions at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

Samueli Academy took a loss when they played away from home two weeks ago, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed last Tuesday. Everything went their way against Legacy College Prep as they made off with a 16-2 win. The victory was some much needed relief for the Firewolves as it spelled an end to their six-game losing streak.

Maya Gonzales made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Gonzales was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Violette Martinez, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and five RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024. Kristina Perez was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.

Century hadn't beaten Bolsa Grande on the road since February 24, 2022 but that history sure didn't bother them on Friday. The Centurions walked away with a 12-9 win over the Matadors.

Century has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 3-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.3 runs over those games. As for Samueli Academy, their record is now 2-7.

Samueli Academy suffered a grim 16-6 defeat to Century when the teams last played back in February of 2024. Can the Firewolves avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
