Softball Recap: Masuk Picks Up 17th Straight Win on the Road

Masuk faced Cheshire in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Panthers never let the Rams get on the board and left with a 3-0 win. Winning may never get old, but the Panthers sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.

Julia Bacoulis made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 16 over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run and one double.

Bacoulis wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Sofia Lieto, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI.

Masuk's victory was their 17th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for Cheshire, their defeat ended a 14-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 11-2.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Masuk will challenge Bethel at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. The Wildcats have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13 runs per game on average), something the Panthers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Cheshire, they will face off against Mercy at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
