Softball Recap: Bernards Comes Up Short

Bernards was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They took an 8-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Phillipsburg Stateliners. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Stateliners this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-7 on Tuesday.

Gabby Mongo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and five unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up 11 Ks. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.2 strikeouts per game.

At the plate, Brooke Helpinstill was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Kriztina Lekai, who earned one run and two stolen bases.

Bernards' loss dropped their record down to 2-11. As for Phillipsburg, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-6.

Looking ahead, Bernards will head out to challenge Somerville on Saturday. As for Phillipsburg, they will host South Hunterdon on Saturday.
