Edgewood and Franklin are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Cougars will square off against the Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The last three games Edgewood has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
On Monday, Edgewood didn't have quite enough to beat Valley View and fell 9-8.
Leigha Combs was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and six unearned) runs off 12 hits (and only one walk). Combs was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Edgewood got a big performance out of Evie Short, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Short also brought in an RBI, marking her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Sam Verhoff, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Franklin entered their tilt with Waynesville on Monday with four consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with five. They never let the Spartans get on the board and left with an 18-0 victory. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matches by ten runs or more this season.
Josie Whitt was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with one home run and five RBI. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Adrian Allen was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run, five RBI, and two runs.
Franklin always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Franklin pushed their record up to 12-4 with the win, which was their ninth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Edgewood, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season.
Everything went Edgewood's way against Franklin when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Edgewood made off with an 8-1 win. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Wildcats have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
