Softball Recap: Poth Has No Trouble Against Nixon-Smiley

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against La Vernia, Poth was happy to have turned things around on Tuesday. They put the hurt on the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs with a sharp 12-2 win. The victory continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Mustangs: they've now won nine in a row.

Karlee Kroll spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on one hit.

On the hitting side, Jetta Jorden was incredible, going 2-for-4 with five RBI, two doubles, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Caitlyn Castillo, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

Jorden wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Poth kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's a new trend for Poth: they were averaging 3.3 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matches they've averaged 11.2.

Poth's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-6. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Nixon-Smiley, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Poth will challenge Karnes City at 6:00 p.m. on March 18th. As for Nixon-Smiley, they will take on Goliad at 6:00 p.m. on March 18th. Nixon-Smiley has given up an average of 10.9 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
