Basketball Recap: Lafayette Jefferson Starts Season with Victory on the Road

Lafayette Jefferson had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They enjoyed a cozy 55-38 victory over the University Trailblazers on Saturday. That's more bragging rights for the Bronchos, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Maya Layton went supernova, dropping a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists. Those 13 assists gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Aaliyah Coney, who posted ten points.

They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Lafayette Jefferson was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as University only racked up nine.

Several Trailblazers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Mackenzie Feeney, who put up two points along with six assists, five steals, and three blocks. Feeney is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last four games she's played dating back to last season. Sydney Culp was another key player, shooting 50% from the field to rack up 15 points.

University is on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, Lafayette Jefferson will square off against Lake Central at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for University, they have already played their next contest, a 50-38 win against Danville on the 11th.
