League recap: Hoke County climbs in state rankings with win

4A Southeastern recap Oct. 9, 2012

Hoke County moved up to 51 from 78 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 4A Southeastern. A 35-7 win over Lumberton helped the Bucks improve their standing.

Richmond extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Purnell Swett, 56-0. The win marks seventh in a row for the the Raiders.

Scotland's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Jaylend Ratliffe threw for 58 yards and Tra'Shawn Gregory had 47 yards receiving. On the ground Ratliffe chipped in 68 yards. Jalen McLean helped Scotland's passing attack out by catching one ball for 11 yards.

The Fighting Scots' Ratliffe and Gregory have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Ratliffe has thrown for 914 yards this season, while Gregory, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 23 catches for 324 yards. Detrez Newsome from Hoke County leads the league in rushing with 918 yards.

Newsome of the Julian Brown's team is only 82 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season.

A big matchup in 4A Southeastern this week will be when the Bucks take on Richard Bailey's team. Hoke County is currently in second, while the Fighting Scots are in third.

There should be lots of points scored when the Bucks and Scotland face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Hoke County comes in having scored 220 this season, while the Fighting Scots have scored 234. The Bucks scored 35 points last week as they bested the Pirates.

Richmond took down the Rams 56-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
