Baseball Game Preview: Berne-Knox-Westerlo Bulldogs vs. Middleburgh Knights

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Bulldogs will face off against the Middleburgh Knights at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Middleburgh took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Berne-Knox-Westerlo, who comes in off a win.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo will roll into the contest after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Monday, then bounced right back against Mayfield on Wednesday. The Bulldogs blew past the Panthers 14-5. The win continues a trend for the Bulldogs in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now won three in a row.

Henry Ferguson was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three RBI. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, GG Lefkatditis and Chris Dwyer did most of the damage at the plate: Lefkatditis went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double, while Dwyer went 1-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Those two hits gave Lefkatditis a new career-high. Blake Quay was another key player, earning two runs and five stolen bases.

Meanwhile, Middleburgh has relied on a stalwart pitchers averaging 3.56 runs allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Wednesday. They came up short against Cobleskill-Richmondville, falling 13-0. That makes it the first time this season the Knights have let down their home crowd.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo's victory bumped their record up to 4-6-1. As for Middleburgh, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-3.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo might still be hurting after the 12-5 loss they got from Middleburgh when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Bulldogs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
