Baseball Game Preview: Hughes Springs Mustangs vs. New Diana Eagles

Hughes Springs is 2-8 against New Diana since March of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. Hughes Springs will square off against New Diana at 7:00 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Hughes Springs 2.3, New Diana 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.

While Hughes Springs' win against Jefferson wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Hughes Springs had just enough and edged out Jefferson 6-5. The victory continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Bulldogs: they've now won seven in a row.

Meanwhile, New Diana entered their tilt with Chapel Hill on Saturday with four consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with five. They put the hurt on the Red Devils with a sharp 11-2 win. New Diana's victory was all the more impressive since the Red Devils were averaging only 3.91 runs allowed on the season.

Colt McDowell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on three hits and racked up 12 Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, New Diana got a big performance out of Mason Sherman, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Ayden Hamilton also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

New Diana always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .545. The last time their OBP was this high was back in March of 2024.

Hughes Springs' record now sits at 16-3. As for New Diana, their record is now 12-6-1.

Hughes Springs couldn't quite get it done against New Diana in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 as they fell 5-1. Can Hughes Springs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
