After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Lake Zurich, Zion-Benton was happy to have turned things around on Saturday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Vernon Hills Cougars, sneaking past 7-5. The game was the first time the Zee-Bees have beaten the Cougars on their field since May 12, 2016.

The team relied heavily on Brayden Duran, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Michael Gonzalez, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI.

Zion-Benton's victory bumped their record up to 6-16. As for Vernon Hills, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-15 record this season.

Zion-Benton and Vernon Hills could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Zee-Bees (ranked 439th) will meet Libertyville (ranked 11th) at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Vernon Hills will face off against Highland Park at 4:45 p.m. on Monday with a big rank disadvantage (419 vs. 90).
