Softball Game Preview: Corona del Mar Sea Kings vs. Newport Harbor Sailors

Corona del Mar hasn't had much luck against Newport Harbor recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Sea Kings will be playing at home against the Sailors at 3:15 p.m. Corona del Mar is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.

Corona del Mar took a 12-run loss the last time they faced off against Estancia, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Sea Kings skirted past the Eagles 5-3.

Kiera Madan made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Madan was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.

Madan wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Natali Vasquez, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance also gave Vasquez a new career-high in doubles (two). Bella Uy was another, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Meanwhile, Newport Harbor lost 12-4 to Edison on Tuesday.

Lilia Horsley was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Dominique Bettencourt, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Newport Harbor has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-11 record this season. As for Corona del Mar, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 7-11.
