Preview: Mayville Wildcats vs. Vassar Vulcans

Mayville is 0-5 against Vassar since March of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Mayville Wildcats will be playing in front of their home fans against the Vassar Vulcans at 7:30 p.m. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Michigan (Mayville is ranked 638th, while Vassar is ranked 634th).

Last Friday, Mayville was able to grind out a solid win over Caseville, taking the game 48-36. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Mayville.

Mayville found their leader in underclassman Jackson Buhl, who almost dropped a double-double on 21 points and nine rebounds. Buhl is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down nine or more in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Mason Halsne, who scored 12 points.

Meanwhile, Vassar came up short against All Saints Central on Monday and fell 55-48.

Austin Long put forth a good effort for the losing side as he scored 19 points along with five assists and five rebounds. That was a full 39.6% of Vassar's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Landon Klinesmith, who scored six points along with six rebounds and two steals.

Mayville has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-8 record this season. As for Vassar, their loss dropped their record down to 3-15.

This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Mayville have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 31.9 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Vassar struggles in that department as they've been averaging 27.1 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Mayville couldn't quite finish off Vassar in their previous matchup back in December of 2022 and fell 45-42. Will Mayville have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other basketball content.
