Baseball Game Preview: Mingo Central Miners vs. Phelps Hornets

The Mingo Central Miners will square off against the Phelps Hornets at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Mingo Central will be strutting in after a win while Phelps will be coming in after a loss.

Mingo Central took a ten-run defeat the last time they faced off against Tug Valley, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Miners came out on top in a nail-biter against the Panthers on Tuesday, sneaking past 3-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Miners have posted against the Panthers since April 29, 2019.

Dylan Vance made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has become a key player for Mingo Central: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most one hit, but 1-8 otherwise. Vance was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Noah Newsome, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Tyler Coleman was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Mingo Central was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .387. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Tug Valley only posted a batting average of .125.

Meanwhile, Phelps was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their eighth straight loss. They lost 16-1 to East Ridge.

Phelps' defeat dropped their record down to 2-8. As for Mingo Central, their win ended a nine-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-9.
