Senior record-breaker still ends up on the winning side in 3A title game, helping Riverside to sixth state crown since 2005.

Senior pitcher Zach Hare of Riverside (Ellwood City) saw his record postseason no-hit streak come to an end at 34 innings Wednesday in the third inning of Pennsylvania's Class 3A state championship game at Medlar Field in University Park.

Despite giving up two hits and a pair of runs, Hare helped Riverside (21-2) capture its sixth state title since 2005 with a 4-2 win over Mount Carmel. Under 81-year old Dan Oliastro, who is in his 57th season as head coach, the Panthers previously finished on top in 2005, 2006, 2011, 2012 and 2023.

Hare's overall no-hit streak was 36.1 innings extending to his final regular season game.

The 6-foot-3 Slippery Rock University commit entered Wednesday's game at 31 1/3 consecutive no-hit innings in the postseason, which is believed to be a national record.

Chis Tarranto of Notre Dame (Biloxi, Miss.) in 1961 with 45 no-hit innings and Tom Murray of St. Bernard (Conn.) in 1969 are the only two known pitchers in high school baseball history with longer overall (regular season and postseason) streaks than Hare's 36.1.

In a 6-0 win over Mohawk Area (Bessemer) in the quarterfinals last week, Hare struck out 13 in a complete-game shutout. He recorded 15 strikeouts in a perfect game to give the Panthers a 1-0 win against Quaker Valley (Leetsdale) in his previous outing May 28 in the WPIAL title game.

Prior to Wednesday, Hare's streak spanned five postseason games. He struck out 55 batters while walking only eight without a run allowed.

Hare also plays first base and leads the team in home runs with four while batting over .400.
