Softball Recap: Mellen Triumphs

Mellen's game on Tuesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Phillips Loggers as they made off with a 15-6 victory. This was payback for the Grainte Diggers, who suffered a 12-2 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Maleah Nortunen made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. Nortunen was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

In other batting news, Mellen let Kaylee Erickson and Trinity Conley run wild. Erickson got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one double, while Conley went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Brenna Nortunen was another key player, going 1-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Mellen's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Phillips, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-3 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mellen will face off against Turtle Lake/Clayton at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Phillips, they will take on Butternut at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
