Basketball Recap: Mt. Vernon Find Success

There's no place like home for Mt. Vernon, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Monday. They pulled ahead with a 50-49 photo finish over the McDonald County Mustangs on Monday. This was payback for the Mountaineers, who suffered a 67-36 loss the last time these two teams met.

Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Carlie Martin, who posted 17 points along with seven rebounds and five steals. That's the most points Martin has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Dakota O'Brien, who almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine boards.

Mt. Vernon's record is now 7-9. As for McDonald County, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-11 record this season.

Mt. Vernon will challenge East Newton at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for McDonald County, they will look to defend their home court on Thursday against Lamar at 6:00 p.m.
