Basketball Recap: El Capitan Takes a Loss

El Capitan was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their ninth straight defeat. They were two points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 44-42 heartbreaker at the hands of the Calvin Christian Crusaders. The Vaqueros were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Crusaders apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.

Despite the defeat, El Capitan saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Trevin Curo dropped a double-double on 12 points and 17 boards. Curo has been hot for a while, having posted nine or more boards the last 11 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Brandt Barker, who posted six points and ten rebounds.

Even though they lost, El Capitan smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in four consecutive matches.

Calvin Christian's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Sawyer Goggin led the charge by dropping a double-double on 25 points and ten rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Caleb Lapka, who earned nine points along with six rebounds and five steals.

El Capitan's loss dropped their record down to 3-12. As for Calvin Christian, their record is now 6-3.

El Capitan didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 66-57 victory against Mission Vista on the 4th. As for Calvin Christian, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 64-60 defeat against Morse on the 4th.
