Riverside is 1-9 against Covington since April of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Pirates will be playing at home against the Buccs at 11:00 a.m. Riverside is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Miami East hit Riverside with a five-run sixth inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Pirates lost 9-3 to the Vikings.
Riley Dillon put in work no matter where she played. She pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off ten hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run.
Dillon wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Miah Carman, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Covington entered their tilt with Lehman Catholic on Friday with five consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with six. They never let the Cavaliers get on the board and left with a 13-0 win. The Buccs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matches by ten runs or more this season.
Emalyn Johnson was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Kylie Palsgrove was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
Covington kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in 12 consecutive contests.
Riverside's loss dropped their record down to 12-9. As for Covington, their victory bumped their record up to 13-7.
Covington's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Riverside has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.3 hits per game. It's a different story for Covington, though, as they've been averaging 10.3 hits. Given Riverside's sizable advantage in that area, the Buccs will need to find a way to close that gap.
Riverside came out on top in a nail-biter against Covington when the teams last played back in April, sneaking past 7-6. Do the Pirates have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Buccs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
