Baseball Recap: Haywood's Luck Changes for the Better on Thursday

After low-scoring totals in their previous eight contests, Haywood brought some dynamite into their most recent match. They put the hurt on the Ripley Tigers with a sharp 15-9 victory on Thursday. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Tomcats as it put an end to their nine-game losing streak.

Owen Stanley was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March. He was even better at the plate, scoring four runs and stealing four bases while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. Haywood is undefeated when Stanley posts two or more runs, but 0-14 otherwise.

In other batting news, Ty' Sean Mercer and Cordarion Jelks did most of the damage at the plate: Mercer scored two runs and stole four bases while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances, while Jelks scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. That's the most runs Jelks has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Zyan Beard, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-4.

Haywood's victory bumped their record up to 4-14. As for Ripley, their defeat was their eighth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 3-10.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Haywood will take on Jackson North Side at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Ripley, they will face off against Gibson County at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
