Basketball Game Preview: Animas Panthers vs. Carrizozo Grizzlies

Animas has gone 10-0 against Carrizozo recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Animas Panthers will take on the Carrizozo Grizzlies at 2:30 p.m. Animas' defense has only allowed 24.5 points per game this season, so Carrizozo's offense will have their work cut out for them.

Animas' tournament run continued when they took on Sandia Prep on Saturday. Animas was just a bucket shy of victory and fell 28-27 to Sandia Prep. The Panthers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Journey Sheehan, who posted seven points along with nine rebounds and three steals. She has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Sofia Martinez-Cristancho, who had seven points and seven rebounds.

Meanwhile, Carrizozo was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their sixth straight defeat dating back to last season. They lost to Lake Arthur on the road by a 38-23 margin. One positive for the Grizzlies, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.

Animas' loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Carrizozo, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-5.

Animas took their win against Carrizozo in their previous matchup back in November of 2023 by a conclusive 55-33. Does Animas have another victory up their sleeve, or will Carrizozo turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
