Layla Clayton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on seven hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kayla Johnson, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. Marisa Reyes was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Gray Collegiate Academy faced South Florence in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The War Eagles put the hurt on the Bruins with a sharp 13-0 victory. Considering the War Eagles have won 22 matchups by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Aspen Boulware and Maddox Long did most of the damage at the plate: Boulware went 1-for-2 with three stolen bases and three runs, while Long went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaley Anderson, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
Gray Collegiate Academy hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in nine consecutive contests.
Gray Collegiate Academy's win was their 36th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 30-2. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.1 runs on average over those games. As for York, their record now sits at 24-3.
Tuesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. York has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .435. However, it's not like Gray Collegiate Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .521.
