Baseball Game Recap: Sandy Valley Cardinals vs. Minerva Lions

Sandy Valley had lost five straight on the road, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 2-8 to make it six. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 6-4 to the Minerva Lions, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Cardinals were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Lions apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2023.

As for Minerva, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 7-4. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.5 runs across that stretch.

For Minerva's part, Brendon Huth looked comfortable as he tossed four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Braydon Wood, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brennan Barnes, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sandy Valley will take on Claymont at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Minerva, they will be playing at home against Marlington at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Lions 3.1, the Dukes 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
