Tampa Catholic is a perfect 6-0 against Carrollwood Day since March of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Tampa Catholic Crusaders will be taking part in a tournament against the Carrollwood Day Patriots at 7:00 p.m. Tampa Catholic will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last.
Tampa Catholic fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Sickles on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Gryphons by a score of 13-12. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Crusaders, who until this game were averaging 2.47 runs allowed.
Tampa Catholic got a massive performance out of Jose Carrero, who scored two runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. What's more, Carrero posted three RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Carson Arnold, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
Even though they lost, Tampa Catholic lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Carrollwood Day waltzed into their contest on Saturday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They walked away with a 6-2 victory over the Hawks.
Nick Riedel made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. Riedel was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, Allen Soriano was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. Christian Clarke was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
Tampa Catholic's defeat ended an 11-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 12-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Carrollwood Day, their win bumped their record up to 9-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Tampa Catholic has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Carrollwood Day struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Tampa Catholic skirted past Carrollwood Day 3-2 in their previous matchup back in February. Will Tampa Catholic repeat their success, or does Carrollwood Day have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
