Softball Recap: Western Guilford's Losing Streak Snapped at 12 Games

Western Guilford can bid farewell to their 12-game losing streak thanks to their game on Friday. They put the hurt on the Grimsley Whirlies with a sharp 17-1 win. The contest marked the Hornets' most dominant victory of the season.

Essence Carter made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Carter was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in February.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Katelyn Russell, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. Those six RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Amy Moradel, who scored two runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

Western Guilford kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 3.8 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 9.2.

Western Guilford's win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-9 and their overall record up to 3-13. As for Grimsley, their loss was their sixth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 4-11.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Western Guilford will host Page at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hornets are facing the Pirates at the right time seeing as the Pirates are stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Grimsley, they will welcome Ragsdale at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Whirlies' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Tigers have averaged an impressive 11.1 runs per game this season.
