Baseball Recap: Grossmont Triumphs

Grossmont had lost three games straight , but after bumping their record up to 9-12 on Friday that streak is in the rearview. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 win over the El Capitan Vaqueros. That's more bragging rights for the Foothillers, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Tyler Holmes was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Colton Burke, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

As for El Capitan, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last 12 matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-12 record this season. They just can't catch a break and have now endured five defeats in a row.

On El Capitan's side, they got a good showing from Jay Aschenbrener, who tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Aschenbrener has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, David Vera was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That stolen base was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Branden Hawkins, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

Grossmont will have a chance to go back-to-back against El Capitan: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
