Softball Game Preview: Woodlawn Cardinals vs. Mt. Vernon Rams

The Woodlawn Cardinals will square off against the Mt. Vernon Rams at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Neither of those teams managed to put together many runs in their previous contests, so the offenses might be a little more motivated than usual.

Monday just wasn't the day for Woodlawn's offense. They fell 4-0 to Waltonville on Monday. The Cardinals haven't had much luck with the Spartans recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.

Woodlawn saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hanley Lamacchia, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. Lamacchia has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played.

Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for Mt. Vernon's offense. They fell just short of Crab Orchard by a score of 1-0 on Monday. The matchup marked the first time this season in which the Rams were not able to get on the board.

Mt. Vernon's defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 7-3. As for Woodlawn, their loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 5-1 and their overall record down to 6-9.

Woodlawn's speedy runners might be the difference in Tuesday's game. The Cardinals have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Mt. Vernon, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Woodlawn continue to outrun the ball?

Woodlawn came out on top in a nail-biter against Mt. Vernon when the teams last played back in April of 2023, sneaking past 3-2. Do the Cardinals have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Rams turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
