Eagles capture third consecutive national title, sixth overall since 2013.

The 2022 GEICO Nationals didn't disappoint as three days of high-level competition resulted in Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) capturing its second consecutive event title and third consecutive national title.

The Eagles picked up three hard-fought wins at GEICO Nationals, defeating No. 8 AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) 70-63 in the first round before knocking off No. 4 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) 62-57 in the semifinals and taking down No. 3 Link Academy (Branson, Mo.) 60-49 in the championship game.

Montverde Academy was led by a balanced attack all weekend as the Eagles had a different high scorer in each of their three wins. Duke signee Dariq Whitehead averaged 15.7 points, 5.7 assists, 3.0 rebounds, unsigned senior Malik Reneau averaged 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds, Texas signee Dillon Mitchell averaged 13 points and 11.3 rebounds to lead the way.

Indiana signee Jalen Hood-Schifino chipped in 6.7 points and 5.6 assists, Purdue pledge Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn averaged seven points and five-star junior Kwame Evans Jr. averaged eight points and six rebounds.

Prior to the 2021-22 season, MaxPreps adopted a split approach to the rankings. The MaxPreps Top 25 is a measure of public and private schools belonging to recognized governing bodies that compete for state championships. The National Top 20 encompasses a broad spectrum of sub-collegiate programs that in most cases are not full members of state-level governing bodies and do not compete for state championships.

MaxPreps National Champions in 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020 and 2021, Montverde's dominance spans over the past decade as the program has compiled a record of 287-23 since head coach Kevin Boyle took over prior to the 2011-12 season. The Orlando-area power has finished in the top 10 in 11 consecutive seasons.

NBA standouts to play under Boyle during his tenure include Joel Embiid, R.J. Barrett, D'Angelo Russell, Ben Simmons, Cade Cunningham and Scottie Barnes among others.
