Baseball Recap: Nonnewaug Starts Season with Victory Against Gilbert

Nonnewaug gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Wednesday. They put the hurt on the Gilbert Yellowjackets with a sharp 14-2 victory. That's more bragging rights for the Chiefs, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Brady Herman looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high.

At the plate, Nonnewaug let R.J. Barksdale and Matt Dutton run wild. Barksdale scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-2, while Dutton got on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most runs Dutton has posted since back in April of 2024. Henry Keil was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3.

Nonnewaug hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Gilbert struck out nine times.

Nonnewaug didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 9-1 win against Pomperaug on the 10th. As for Gilbert, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Shepaug Valley at 3:45 p.m. on the 21st.
